On December 9, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan on Tepeyac Hill, the site of a former Aztec Temple.
Dressed as a native princess, she instructs him to visit his bishop and ask that a temple be built on the site of her appearance, for petitions and healing of the Mexican people. "Am I not your mother? Are you not in the crossing of my arms?" The third time she appeared, she instructed Juan to gather roses in his tilma from the hill to take to the bishop; when they fell out, an exquisite image of Our Lady appeared with the crescent moon, an Aztec symbol, under her feet.
